CBD: What it is and Why People Like It

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a chemical compound found in the Cannabis sativa plant, which is also known as marijuana or hemp, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It is a naturally occurring substance that is used to produce CBD oils and CBD edibles.

CBD can be taken in many forms including inhaling CBD via cannabis smoke or vapor or using an aerosol spray. A popular method is using a CBD oil that contains CBD as an active ingredient. CBD-dominant or CBD-infused products can include hemp extract oils, capsules, dried cannabis, liquid CBD, and CBD edibles.
What are the possible benefits of CBD?
Many people swear by CBD oils and edibles to create a feeling of calm and relaxation. (Source: healthline.com). We all have heard our neighbours or friends, including some athletes, talking about using CBD oil, as a natural method which may reduce the pain of inflammation.
Chronic inflammation is often treated with diet or prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Today many people are seeking a natural alternative and are interested in knowing more about the possible benefits associated with using CBD oils and edibles.
According to Leafly, “CBD could contribute a more natural approach to treating inflammation, but more research is needed,” as stated in an article by Laura Tennant quoting a report by The US National Library of Medicine: “Cannabinoids, including CBD, are believed to be anti-inflammatory. Several studies in cells, rodents and humans support the idea that CBD may be an effective anti-inflammatory, but more research is needed to determine how it works and the best applications for specific types of inflammation.” Source: Leafly, Laura Tennant, February 2020 https://www.leafly.ca/news/cbd/cbd-for-inflammation-science, US National Library of Medicine: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/
Those suffering from sleep disorders who may be sleep deprived are also seeking natural or herbal products as sleep aids. It is thought that CBD may help create that much craved ‘sleepy feeling’. CBD does not seem to have an intoxicating effect, such as what is caused by THC in marijuana. Research is being done on an ongoing basis to determine its effects on the human body and brain and to determine its benefits.
In an article in Big Buds Magazine by Karl Deppen, he states: “The rise in popularity of medical marijuana has prompted us to see CBD in a new light, thanks to its possible medicinal advantages that may include pain relief, alleviation from inflammation, insomnia and other stubborn conditions.” (Source: Big Buds Magazine, May 2018, https://bigbudsmag.com/growing-top-cbd-marijuana-strains-cannabidiol/). Deppen goes on to list some popular CBD strains which include CBD Kush (and Kandy Kush), CBD Gold Bud, CBD Charlotte’s Angel, CBD Auto White Widow and Great White Shark CBD,
